Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are tiny plugs which either totally or partially block the flow of tears from the eye into the nose.
Dr Martin Smith will insert the tiny plugs into the small hole in your lid near the nose that drains your tears away. Usually only the lower duct is plugged, but in severe cases the upper ducts can be blocked as well. This is a treatment for a deficiency of the quantity of tears produced and is not suitable for those with meibomian gland dysfunction only, as it will just make the eyes water excessively.
In most cases, Dr Smith will use temporary dissolvable plugs which last 1-3 months to see if the treatment is suitable before inserting permanent plugs.
The permanent plugs are barely visible once inserted and should be comfortable and discreet. Plugs with a small hole in the middle can also be used to slow the flow of tears without blocking it completely.
Cost:
Temporary plugs £210.00
Permanent plugs £370.00
