Myopia Management
Martin Smith Opticians receive UK Accreditation for Hoya MiYOSMART lenses.
Martin Smith Opticians are proud to be one of the very first practices in the UK to receive accreditation from Hoya to dispense MiYOSMART advanced spectacle lenses to children. These new lenses use cutting edge technology called D.I.M.S to help manage the development of myopia/short-sightedness.
What is Myopia (short-sightedness)?
What are the symptoms of Myopia?
Blurred vision, excessive blinking, headaches, squinting, eye strain, eye rubbing.
The average age that children get myopia is 4-13 years of age.
How do Miyosmart lenses work?
Miyosmart lenses use cutting edge technology called D.I.M.S technology (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) to help manage the development of myopia/short-sightedness. The lens is comprised of a clear central zone used to correct the child’s myopia to allow clear vision for school, sport, tv etc. The lenses are great for active children as they are made from high impact polycarbonate which also has UV protection.

Dr Martin Smith BSc DOptom DipTp(IP) Higher Cert GLauc MCOptom, explains :
“If you have noticed your child struggling to see clearly at a distance then your child may have myopia or short-sightedness. MiYOSMART lenses incorporate ground-breaking technology which can change a child’s physiology and clinical trials on MiYOSMART showed that the progression of myopia was reduced by an average of 60%.”
MiYOSMART lenses must be worn throughout the day as the main pair of spectacles for the technology to be effective. Initially, an up-to-date eye examination and prescription is required and the process and commitment to wearing the lens will be explained in a consultation with our qualified Dispensing Opticians at the practice. Due to the ongoing monitoring of the myopia progression, MiYOSMART will be available to patients on Eyeplan, which is our monthly direct debit payment scheme.
In 2018, the MiYOSMART lens with D.I.M.S technology was awarded the prestigious Grand Prize, Grand Award and Special Gold Medal at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, Switzerland. It was also the 2020 SILMO d’Or Award Winner.
