At Martin Smith Opticians we offer specialist consultations for patients with ocular hypertension and suspected glaucoma where we use a combination of the latest technology and Dr Smith’s experience and expertise to monitor and treat those at risk of developing glaucoma. Close monitoring and prophylactic treatment of patients at high risk of glaucoma can prevent many from developing this common disease which can lead to sight loss. Early treatment can also reduce the risk of requiring multiple eye drops or operations which are sometimes needed to control glaucoma once it has developed.

Dr Smith has completed the Higher Professional Certificate in Glaucoma. There are only a small number of UK optometrists with this notoriously demanding qualification and combined with the Independent Prescribing qualification this enables Dr Martin Smith to diagnose and treat raised pressure inside the eye (Ocular Hypertension) and suspected glaucoma.   Treatment can involve eye drops to lower the pressure inside the eye and in the future may also involve laser treatment.   Treatment can halve the risk of developing glaucoma, the second most common cause of irreversible sight loss.
