Medical treatment of Dry Eye
There are various eye drops and drugs that are used in the treatment of dry eye. As an independent prescriber, Dr Smith has the ability to prescribe the full range of medical treatment for dry eye and other conditions. Some of the types of eye drops we may suggest are:
Lubricants: eye drops, gels and ointments may be required with many dry eye conditions for long term comfort. We almost always recommend preservative free eye drops where possible. Dr smith will advise which products are most suitable for you.
Steroids: sometimes used in the short term to reduce inflammation, but should not generally be used for long term treatment
Antibiotics: Some types of antibiotic are helpful for dry eye, either as eye drops or tablets.
Immunosuppressants: Severe dry eye can sometimes be helped by cyclosporin (also known as ciclosporin) eye drops. These can increase tear production and reduce ocular inflammation.
